DG Set Daily Checklist

Use this checklist for the daily pre-start inspection of diesel generator (DG) sets and for recording each test run. It checks that the engine will crank, build voltage and carry the building through the next outage, and gives the engineering team a clean log for fuel, running hours and faults.

How to run this checklist well

  • Photograph the control panel at each test run; it captures voltage, frequency and running hours in one image and stops readings being copied from yesterday.
  • Fix a QR code on the DG enclosure so the operator opens the right checklist and the set's service history on site.
  • Set the next service from running hours as well as the calendar, because a standby set on a site with frequent outages can hit hour limits early.
  • Reconcile fuel stock against running hours every week; a large mismatch is worth investigating for leaks or pilferage.
  • Load test periodically, not only no-load runs; a set that only ever idles can fail when asked to carry the building.

Frequently asked questions

What should be checked daily on a DG set?

Walk round the set before touching the panel: look under it for drips, read the day-tank gauge, pull the dipstick, check the coolant sight glass and battery charger reading, and confirm the controller is in auto with no alarm showing. On test days, note the volts, hertz, oil pressure, water temperature and hour-meter reading while it runs.

How long should a DG set test run last?

Test duration depends on the manufacturer's guidance and site policy. Many sites run a short no-load check frequently and a longer run on load at a set interval, such as weekly or monthly. Let it run until the coolant gauge settles at its working value, and confirm the changeover to DG and back to mains.

Why maintain a DG log book?

The log shows running hours, fuel use, readings and faults over time. It is used to schedule servicing, reconcile diesel consumption, investigate failures and show auditors or insurers that the standby system is maintained. A digital log with photos is easier to search and harder to back-fill than paper.
