Electrical Panel Maintenance Checklist
Use this checklist for routine inspection and planned maintenance of LT panels, distribution boards and panel rooms in industrial and commercial buildings. Walk-round observations are safe with the board energised; anything that means opening covers, cleaning or torquing joints waits for a permit and a confirmed isolation.

How to run this checklist well
- Never let a checklist become a reason to skip isolation; keep the live visual checks and the isolated tasks in separate sections, as here.
- Tag each panel with a QR code so the technician sees its history, last test results and open defects before starting.
- Photograph thermal scan images and test meter readings and attach them to the record; numbers typed later are easy to get wrong.
- Compare insulation resistance and thermal results with the previous round; a falling trend is an early warning even if each reading passes.
- Keep panel rooms locked and log who enters; uncontrolled storage in panel rooms is a common fire risk.
Frequently asked questions
How often should electrical panels be maintained?
Visual inspections are commonly done monthly, while cleaning, tightening and testing during a planned shutdown are often done quarterly or half-yearly. Critical panels, dusty environments and heavily loaded boards may need shorter intervals. Follow the switchgear manufacturer's guidance and any requirements from your electrical inspector or insurer.
What is a thermal scan of an electrical panel?
It is a survey with an infrared imager pointed at busbars, lugs and breakers while current is flowing. A joint or device running noticeably warmer than its neighbours points to a slack termination, an overloaded circuit or a component near the end of its life. Because it does not require shutdown, it is a useful way to find problems between planned maintenance windows.
Can electrical panel maintenance be done while live?
Only visual checks from outside the panel should be done while it is live. Opening covers, cleaning, tightening connections and testing should be done with the panel isolated, locked out and verified dead, under a work permit and by a qualified electrician. This protects workers from shock and arc-flash injuries.
