Lift and Elevator Inspection Checklist
Ride every lift once at the start of the day, landing by landing, and record what you see before occupants start queuing. The first five sections are checks a building engineer or trained security supervisor can do without opening a single panel; the machine room and pit items are verified only while the AMC technician is present, because anything inside the hoistway or controller belongs to the licensed lift contractor.

How to run this checklist well
- Stick a QR code inside each car and one at the main landing: occupants use it to report a fault, and staff scan it to log the morning ride check against that specific lift.
- Test the alarm with someone standing at the security desk, not by watching a light in the car; the point is that a person hears it.
- Count breakdowns and entrapments per lift per month. When the same lift keeps appearing, that list is your agenda for the AMC review meeting.
- Put the statutory inspection expiry for every lift in the maintenance calendar and set the reminder at least a month ahead, since inspectorate visits take time to book.
- Write on the sheet itself that the checklist is for observation only. Rescue and any shaft or controller work stays with trained, authorised people.
Frequently asked questions
How often should lifts be inspected?
Three layers usually apply. The building team rides and checks each lift every day. The AMC contractor services it at the interval written into the contract, commonly once a month. On top of that, most Indian states require a periodic statutory inspection by the state lift inspectorate, so check your state's lift rules for the exact frequency.
What does a lift AMC cover?
A lift AMC normally includes scheduled service visits for lubrication, adjustment and safety checks, plus breakdown attendance. A comprehensive AMC also pays for most replacement parts; a non-comprehensive one bills parts separately. Before signing, confirm the contract states a response time for breakdowns and a shorter one for passenger entrapment.
What should happen when someone is trapped in a lift?
The trapped person presses the alarm or uses the intercom. Security answers, keeps talking to them calmly and immediately calls the trained rescue team or the lift contractor. Only trained staff following the manufacturer's procedure should release the car. Afterwards, log the call time, release time and cause, and review it with the AMC vendor.
