NABH Facility Inspection Checklist

This checklist supports the facility inspection rounds that the NABH Facility Management and Safety (FMS) chapter expects hospitals to run. It covers building safety, fire readiness, engineering utilities, hazardous materials, security and the records that show the programme is working. Use it for routine monthly rounds and as a structured walk-through before an assessment.

How to run this checklist well

  • Walk the same route every month so findings are comparable, and rotate who leads the round to bring fresh eyes.
  • Photograph every finding with its location and raise it as a work order on the spot, so nothing depends on notes typed up later.
  • Keep a register of statutory licences and NOCs with renewal dates and assigned owners; expired documents are a common assessment finding.
  • Pull preventive maintenance completion and breakdown response data from your maintenance system rather than reconstructing it before an assessment.
  • Include night and weekend rounds occasionally, since that is when exits get blocked and panels left open.

Frequently asked questions

What does the NABH FMS chapter cover?

The Facility Management and Safety chapter covers how a hospital plans, maintains and monitors a safe physical environment. That includes building safety, fire and non-fire emergencies, utilities such as power, water and medical gases, hazardous materials, security and the documented plans, rounds and training behind them.

How often should facility inspection rounds be done for NABH?

Most hospitals run a structured facility safety round at least monthly, with some areas such as high-risk zones checked more often. Rounds should be documented, with findings assigned and tracked to closure. Your facility management and safety plan should state the frequency and who participates.

Does NABH facility inspection include medical equipment?

Medical equipment management is part of the wider NABH standards, but it is usually handled by the biomedical engineering department. This checklist focuses on building and engineering infrastructure, such as fire safety, electrical, HVAC, lifts, water and medical gas pipelines, which the facility or engineering team manages.

What records do assessors usually look for in facility management?

Expect requests for the facility management and safety plan, safety round reports with action tracking, preventive maintenance schedules and completion records, fire drill records, statutory licences and NOCs, utility test logs and training records. Records that are dated, complete and easy to retrieve make the assessment far smoother.
