Hospital Housekeeping Checklist
Hospital housekeeping is only as good as the proof behind it. This checklist covers every shift across the building, from patient wards to lobbies and service corridors, and sets out what should be checked at the start of a shift, during cleaning rounds and at handover, so supervisors can confirm work was actually done rather than just signed for.

How to run this checklist well
- Ask staff to scan a QR code at each room or washroom and attach a time-stamped photo, so completion is proven rather than ticked from memory.
- Keep the checklist short enough to use on a phone in the corridor; long paper forms tend to be filled in at the end of the shift.
- Rotate supervisor inspections across zones so every area is seen within a week, not just the busiest wards.
- Review repeat failures weekly and fix the cause (staffing, supplies, chemicals) rather than just re-cleaning.
- Display the colour-coding and dilution chart on every cleaning trolley so new staff can follow it.
Frequently asked questions
How often should hospital housekeeping be checked?
Routine cleaning should be verified every shift, with high-traffic areas such as washrooms, emergency and OPD checked several times per shift. Supervisors usually inspect a sample of rooms in each zone daily, while the quality or infection control team carries out a broader audit weekly or monthly to confirm the standard is holding across the hospital.
Who is responsible for filling in the housekeeping checklist?
Housekeeping staff record their own completed tasks, and the housekeeping supervisor verifies them during rounds and signs off at handover. The infection control nurse and quality team review the records periodically. Splitting doing and verifying this way reduces the risk of tasks being marked done without actually being completed.
Can this checklist be used for NABH assessments?
It supports NABH readiness by giving you dated, consistent records of cleaning, supervision and corrective action, which assessors typically ask to see. It is not a substitute for your hospital's own approved housekeeping policy and SOP, so align the items with your policy and infection control committee guidance before adopting it.
