Patient Room Daily Cleaning Checklist
This checklist covers the daily clean of an occupied inpatient room, in the order the work should be done. Use it to train new staff, to keep the sequence consistent across shifts and to give supervisors a clear standard for spot checks. Discharge or terminal cleaning needs a separate, more thorough procedure.

How to run this checklist well
- Fix a single cleaning sequence and train to it; most missed surfaces come from staff working in a different order each time.
- Place a QR code inside each room so staff log the clean at the bedside, with an optional photo of the finished room.
- Use separate colour-coded cloths for rooms and bathrooms and never carry a bathroom cloth back to the bedside.
- Check the disinfectant's contact time with your infection control team and build it into the routine instead of wiping dry immediately.
- Let patients or attendants flag a missed clean through a feedback QR so you hear about problems before a complaint escalates.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between daily cleaning and terminal cleaning of a patient room?
Daily cleaning is done while the patient is in the room and focuses on high-touch surfaces, the bathroom, bins and floors. Terminal cleaning happens after discharge or transfer and is far more thorough, covering the mattress, all furniture, walls within reach, curtains and equipment before the room is released for the next admission.
Which surfaces in a patient room should be cleaned first?
Work from cleaner to dirtier and from higher to lower surfaces. Start with high-touch items near the patient such as bed rails, call bell and over-bed table, then furniture and fixtures, then the bathroom, and finish with the floor. Using fresh cloths between surface groups stops contamination being carried around the room.
How do we prove a patient room was actually cleaned?
A paper signature only shows someone signed. A digital log, where staff scan a room QR code and attach a time-stamped photo, creates a record that supervisors and auditors can trust. Pair it with random supervisor checks so the record and the room condition are both verified.
